An Attitude of Gratitude
Today is Thanksgiving here in the United States. Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays for several reasons. First, Thanksgiving is an equal opportunity holiday. Almost everyone celebrates it in some way or another. Next, Thanksgiving involves doing things I love to do, namely eating good food and spending quality time with family and friends. Finally, Thanksgiving reminds me to acknowledge and express gratitude for everything in my life.
What if Thanksgiving, without the overeating, came everyday? About 20 years ago, I saw a billboard that said, “the secret to happiness is to be satisfied with what you already have.” All these years later, I think of that billboard when I catch myself focusing on what I don’t have. I’m usually wishing for more clients, more money, a better car, nicer clothes - you get the picture. Now, I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting those things, but it doesn’t feel good to dwell on what is lacking. So, I immediately change my focus and adopt an attitude of gratitude.
Most nights, when I get into bed, I review the day and think of at least 5 things that I am grateful for. It could be as simple as getting through the line at the grocery store in under 10 minutes or as big as forming a new partnership. What are 5 things that you are grateful for today?
